Synopsis

Paul Newman’s longtime passion for debunking the mythology of Western heroes reaches its apex here in a film he considered among his best. Robert Altman directs this adaptation of an Arthur Kopit play and Newman plays the real-life Great American Fraud Buffalo Bill Cody whose wildly popular traveling Western show hires on the Native American leader Sitting Bull. Presented episodically with an ensemble cast in the classic Altman manner, this is a film that gives Newman a chance to create an unsympathetic character with special richness.
