Synopsis
The five young Macaluso sisters live together in a rambling Palermo apartment that they share with hundreds of doves. They make their modest living by renting the birds our for weddings and other functions. One sunny afternoon at the beach a tragedy occurs that changes their lives for good. Writer/director Emma Dante follows the sisters from childhood to their middle years and old age with an especially observant and sympathetic touch. Dante’s background in avant-garde theater and opera holds her in good stead as she finds new means of expression for this melancholic and cathartic tale of family and loss.
